Substitution Suggestions
- Ground Turkey: ground chicken, pork or beef will all work with this recipe. Ground pork is absolutely delicious in this recipe, but to keep it a bit healthier I opt for lean ground turkey most often.
- Shredded Carrots: Use different veggies or your favorites. Chopped broccoli florets, diced bell peppers, and frozen peas, green beans or mixed veggies are all great options.
- Soy Sauce: I use low sodium soy sauce. If you need to avoid soy you can use coconut aminos.
- Honey: I prefer honey in my sauce, but you can use brown sugar, coconut sugar or pure maple syrup. The flavor will be slightly different but just as yummy.
- Sesame Oil: If you don't have sesame oil, no worries. You can use olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil or any other neutral oil. Sesame oil really amps up the flavor of the sauce so if you've never tried it, I highly suggest you finally do!
- Rice Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar or white vinegar will work. Rice vinegar gives the best flavor though.
- Minced Garlic: you can substitute with a teaspoon of garlic powder.
- Ground Ginger: If you prefer fresh ginger, you can use a teaspoon of grated fresh ginger.
- Red Pepper Flakes: You can use black pepper if you prefer.
This recipe for teriyaki turkey rice bowls is a perfect quick weeknight dinner that the whole family is going to go crazy for! A great addition to your weekly menu rotation!

Storing Ground Turkey Teriyaki Bowls
Storing: Store any leftover teriyaki turkey in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. I like to store the turkey and rice in separate containers.
Reheating: Reheat the turkey and rice in the microwave or on the stove over low heat until warmed through.
Freezing: The teriyaki turkey freezes great. Add the cooked and cooled turkey to a freezer safe air tight container. Label, date and freeze. Will stay fresh in freezer for up to 4 months.
Thawing: Thaw the turkey in the fridge overnight and reheat when ready to enjoy.

Tips for Ground Turkey Teriyaki
- If you like your meat extra saucy, double the sauce recipe and the cornstarch slurry.
- Add a little water or chicken stock to thin out the sauce if it gets too thick.
- If adding broccoli, chop the florets up small so they'll cook fast.
