    Beef and Broccoli Recipe Ingredients

    • Round Steak
    • Corn Starch
    • Water
    • Garlic
    • Olive Oil
    • Broccoli Florets
    • Soy Sauce
    • Sesame Oil
    • Dried Chopped Onion Flakes
    • Honey
    • Sesame Seeds, for garnish
    • Green Onions, for garnish
    • Cooked Rice or Noodles, for serving

    Substitution Suggestions:

    • Round Steak: I personally like to use round steak in this recipe, but flank steak or skirt steak would work well too. Even a thinly sliced sirloin steak would be delicious.
    • Garlic: Fresh minced garlic, dried minced garlic or garlic powder will all work for this recipe.
    • Water: For an extra depth of flavor you can use beef broth or stock.
    • Olive Oil: Any good neutral oil work: avocado, canola or vegetable.
    • Broccoli Florets: Fresh or frozen broccoli can be used. If using frozen, thaw it first then add it straight to the beef once its cooked for 3-4 minutes.
    • Soy Sauce: Liquid aminos or coconut aminos can be substituted.
    • Dried Chopped Onion: Onion powder or minced fresh onion can be used.
    • Honey: You can substitute with agave nectar, brown rice syrup or date paste mixed with some water to thin it out. Brown sugar is also a good substitute.

How to Make Easy Beef & Broccoli Stir Fry

    1. In a pourable measuring cup, whisk together the sauce ingredients: soy sauce, sesame oil, onion flakes, honey and corn starch. Set aside.
    2. In a small bowl, whisk together the corn starch, water and garlic.
    • Stir fry sauce ingredients.
    • Beef and broccoli ingredients.
    1. Pour the corn starch slurry over the sliced beef and stir it together well so all the beef is coated.
    2. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.
    3. Add the beef and cook until beef reaches desired doneness. 2-3 minutes for medium. Cook the beef in batches if your skillet isn't large enough for single layers.
    • Beef stir in cornstarch and seasoning mix in large glass bowl.
    • Cooked sliced beef in pan.
    1. Remove beef from skillet and cover with foil to keep warm.
    2. Heat the remaining oil in the same skillet over medium-high heat.
    3. Add the broccoli and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
    4. Return the beef to the pan with all its juices and stir it into the broccoli.
    5. Pour the sauce over the beef and broccoli and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
    6. Serve over hot cooked rice or noodles and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

Tips for the Best Beef and Broccoli

    • To slice beef easily: cut it when it is really cold (even almost frozen), use a sharp knife and cut against the grain.
    • Sear the beef in a hot skillet and don't overcrowd the pan. Cook beef in a single layer, in batches if needed.
    • Don't over cook the beef or it will become chewing and tough.
    • For a more saucy texture, omit tossing the beef in the corn starch slurry and instead add an extra tablespoon of corn starch to the sauce mix.
    • To make the sauce a bit more darker in color you can add 1 teaspoon of dark soy sauce to the sauce mixture.
    • Want it spicy? Add some red pepper flakes or siracha to the sauce mix.

FAQs About Beef & Broccoli Stir Fry

What is the best cut of meat for stir fry:

I prefer to use round steak, but flank steak and sirloin steak create an equally tender and delicious bite of beef.

Can I make beef and broccoli ahead of time?

Yes, this recipe works great for meal prepping. It will last in the fridge for 3-4 days and reheats well in the microwave or on the stove over low heat.

Do I need to boil broccoli before stir fry?

No, boiling is an unnecessary step. It will steam enough in the skillet. If you like it a little bit more soft, add a couple of tablespoons of water with the broccoli and place a lid on the pan for a couple minutes until it has softened a bit more.

What is beef and broccoli sauce made of?

For a traditional beef and broccoli the sauce is made of soy sauce, broth, sugar, sesame oil and oyster sauce. My recipe uses some of the traditional ingredients, but I have enhanced the sauce recipe for our own liking and it is delicious!
