I have been making recipes like this for years, from working in restaurant kitchens to creating simple meals at home for my family, and I have made egg salad more times than I can count. This version is just how my grandma used to make it, creamy and full of flavor. When I was in college, I would stop by her house between classes and she would have egg salad waiting for me in the fridge, along with her always full candy jar. That candy jar now sits on my table as a sweet reminder of her, and this recipe always brings me right back to those lunches with her.

Classic Egg Salad Recipe Ingredients
- Hard Boiled Eggs
- Miracle Whip
- Salt
- Black Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Dried Chives
Substitution Suggestions
- Miracle Whip: If you prefer Mayo feel free to use it. This is an ongoing debate at our house. We are split, half like the whip and the others like mayo. I grew up with the whip and my grandma used Miracle Whip, so I use it more often than the other stuff. I like them both, but I really like the tang from the whip. Either can be used. When I use mayo, I add a splash of lemon juice to give it some acid.
- Seasonings: I love the blend of garlic and onion together and this is what my grandma would add. However, you can use what you like. Paprika, Italian seasoning, lemon pepper, fresh or dried dill or parsley are all delicious options.
- Ad-ins: Chopped pickles, relish, finely minced celery, sliced green onions or chopped cooked bacon are all delicious add-ins. If you like mustard, 1-2 tablespoons added in is delicious or some horseradish will add a little kick!

How to Make Egg Salad
- First, after the eggs are peeled, chop them up.
- Then to the chopped eggs, add half of the Miracle Whip and remaining ingredients to a bowl and mix it all together well. If you like it creamier add more Miracle Whip a tablespoon or so at a time until you have reached your desired creaminess.
- Spoon the egg salad onto some bread with some lettuce, cheese and tomato or just plain is how my grandma served it and I'd devour it.

How to Make the Perfect Easy Peel Hard Boiled Eggs
I have tried so many ways to make hard boiled eggs, and every single one of them felt like an epic fail. Until I made them in the Instant Pot! Now I will never go back. It makes them so easily and they peel perfectly every time. If you do not have an Instant Pot, no worries, you can make the eggs whatever way works best for you. Find my Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs recipe HERE.
How to Chop Hard Boiled Eggs
I will let you in on a little secret, I don't do any chopping at all. I will either use an egg slicer and then roughly chop the slices or I have a tool from Pampered Chef called the Mix n Masher that works like a charm. Either way works well and requires no real chopping. You can also smoosh the eggs through a cooling grid, but I find the wire rack a pain to clean afterwards.
Serving Egg Salad
The classic way is to smother a piece of soft bread with it and enjoy an egg salad sandwich! Here are some other delicious ways to enjoy it:
- Smeared on toast with some avocado slices.
- Fill a tortilla for a yummy wrap.
- Spoon into lettuce cups or over chopped lettuce.
- Use it as a dip with your favorite crackers and pretzels.

What to Serve with Egg Salad Sandwich
I love the classic combo of soup and sandwich but so many things can be served with sandwiches. Here are some of our favorites:
Storing Egg Salad
Store the egg salad in an air tight container in the fridge for up 4 days.
Heather's Favorite Tools for this Recipe
- These nestled mixing bowls are my favorite for prepping ingredients.
- I used to be a Pampered Chef consultant back in the day and I still love and use all the products I have, including the egg slicer. I also like this Kitchenaid egg slicer too!
- This Meat Chopper isn't just the best thing for crumbling and cooking ground meat, it also works great for hard boiled eggs!
- I love my Instant Pot for boiling eggs!
Tips for Classic Egg Salad Recipe
- Make the eggs a few days ahead of time so they're available anytime you want egg salad!
- To serve this salad as a dip for any gathering, put the bowl of egg salad inside another bowl filled with ice. It will help keep the salad cold for a longer period of time.
