I have been cooking and baking from scratch for decades, starting in restaurant kitchens and continuing at home for my own crew. Every waffle recipe on my site is tested multiple times to get the texture just right, with simple steps that work for real life mornings. My kids are my toughest critics, so if a recipe passes their taste test, I know it is ready to share. This one combines experience, practice, and plenty of family feedback into a waffle you can trust.

Banana Waffles Recipe Ingredients
- Ripe Bananas
- Large Eggs
- Pure Vanilla Extract
- Honey
- Milk
- Whole Wheat Flour
- Baking Powder
- Cinnamon
- Salt

Substitution Suggestions
- Ripe Bananas: Make sure the bananas are overripe. The riper the better because the bananas become more sweet as they ripen. An ideal banana is yellow that is covered with black spots.
- Pure Vanilla Extract: I feel it is so important to use pure extracts when at all possible. They yield the best flavor. Most imitation extracts will leave an unpleasant aftertaste in your food.
- Honey: Feel free to use your sweetener of choice or leave it out all together. White sugar, brown sugar or maple syrup are great substitutes.
- Milk: Substitute your milk of choice, any unsweetened type of milk will work. Buttermilk is a good substitute as well.
- Whole Wheat Flour: Most of the time I like to use a blend of whole wheat flour and all purpose flour because I love the texture and flavor it creates. However, these waffles are fabulous with all whole wheat flour! You can also use only all purpose flour or white whole wheat flour as well and will still have delicious waffles!
How to Make Banana Waffles
- First, heat your Waffle Iron. Follow your waffle iron manual instructions. I turn my waffle iron on to heat while I make the batter. Then grease it well so the waffles don't stick.
- Next, in a large mixing bowl whisk together the mashed bananas, eggs, vanilla extract and honey until combined well.
- Then whisk in the milk until smooth.

- Now add the dry ingredients: whole wheat flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Whisk it just until everything is incorporated. Lumpy batter is good batter!
- Let the batter rest for at least 5 minutes.
- Using a ladle or measuring cup, scoop and pour the batter into the middle of the waffle iron. My iron takes about ½ cup or so of batter. Shut the top of the waffle maker and cook for about 3-4 minutes. Follow your waffle maker instructions for timing.

Pro Tip: Place waffles on a baking sheet with a cooling rack. You can keep the waffles warm in a very low oven (170°F) until all the waffles are made. Try not to stack the waffles too much because the steam can make the waffles soggy.
Why does the waffle batter have to rest?
Letting the batter rest is the secret to creating the fluffiest centers of waffles. It's an important step to avoid getting rubbery waffles. The baking powder in the batter creates air pockets while resting and the gluten is taking time to relax, resulting in the fluffiest waffles. This step should never be skipped!
Serving Banana Waffles
I love serving waffles with a side of bacon or another breakfast meat for a savory balance. Sometimes I will add scrambled or fried eggs to make the meal even more filling. Fresh fruit is another delicious option, and my easy fruit salad pairs perfectly with waffles for a bright and simple side.

Banana Belgian Waffle Toppings
These are some delicious ways to top your banana waffles.
- Peanut butter and maple syrup
- Peanut butter, sliced bananas and honey.
- Fresh berries like: strawberries, raspberries or blueberries.
- Jam or jelly that can be warmed up and thinned into a syrup.
- Greek yogurt with some fresh fruit like berries or sliced bananas.
- Chocolate chips and whipped cream
- Make it dessert: add a scoop of ice cream, chocolate syrup and whipped cream.
- Make a sandwich: cut the waffle into quarters and add some cream cheese and cinnamon or peanut butter and jelly.
Are you more of a waffle fan or a pancake fan? I enjoy both, but waffles always come out on top for me. If you agree, you will want to browse some of my other homemade waffle recipes too. Make a batch of classic Belgian Waffles, treat yourself to Chocolate Waffles or Chocolate Chip Waffles, or enjoy a throwback favorite with Peanut Butter and Jelly Waffles.
Storing Waffles
Storing: These banana waffles can be stored in an air tight zip top bag or container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Freezing: Placed cooled waffles in a single layer on sheet pans. You can leave them whole or cut them into quarters. I like to cut them into quarters so I can toast them. Place waffles in freezer. Once frozen, place waffles in a freezer bag or freezer safe air tight container. Label, date and freeze. Waffles will last at least 4 months in the freezer.
Reheating: Waffles can be reheated in the microwave or in the toaster, either thawed or frozen. Place waffles on microwave safe plate and microwave for a minute. Check waffles, if still cold microwave in 30 second intervals until warmed through. I prefer them toasted because it brings back the crispy edges.

Heather's Favorite Tools for this Recipe
- These nestled mixing bowls are my favorite for prepping ingredients.
- I have a commercial Waring waffle maker and I love it, but it is pricey. This waffle iron from Cuisinart is a good choice and more affordable. Still an investment but these irons tend to last a long time. I still have my first Toastmaster waffle maker that I bought in high school!
- Long ago, I used to be a Pampered Chef consultant and I still prefer their baking tools and pans to any others. They're baking pans are the ones I primarily use. Find yourself a consultant, host a party and treat yourself to a set.
- These sheet pans from Nordic Ware are good ones.
Tips for Banana Waffles
- Always fluff your flour before measuring. This helps make sure that no extra flour is added to the waffles which can make them more dense.
- Double check your dates on your baking powder. Old and expired baking powder will not do its job right.
- Start with room temperature ingredients for best results.
- Be careful not to overmix the batter. Overmixing will create rubbery waffles instead of fluffy ones.
- Let the waffle batter rest. Do not ever skip this step. It is essential in getting fluffy waffles.
- Read and follow your waffle iron instructions for greasing the iron and cooking the waffles. Every waffle maker is different.
- As you cook the waffles, place them on a baking sheet with a cooling rack and then put in a low oven to stay warm and crisp until ready to eat.
