- Versatile recipe that can be used as a dip, or a topping for tacos, nachos and more!
- Perfect for game day, parties, or casual family nights.

Homemade Queso Recipe Ingredients
- Cream Cheese
- Pepper Jack Cheese
- Colby Jack Cheese
- Canned Tomatoes with Green Chiles
- Sour Cream
- Heavy Whipping Cream
- Red Pepper Flakes (optional)
Substitution Suggestions
- Cheese: I really like the combination of pepper jack and Colby jack. However you can use your favorite. Cheddar and pepper jack would be a great combo and so would cheddar and Monterey jack. There are so many options!
- Canned Tomatoes with Green Chiles: You can also use just plain canned petite diced tomatoes with a can of green chiles. Either way works. Just DO NOT DRAIN the cans. The liquid helps flavor and smooth out the dip.
- Sour Cream: You can use plain Greek yogurt but the texture of the dip isn't as smooth. It still tastes great though!
- Heavy Whipping Cream: I use heavy cream because it has a much richer flavor. You could substitute whole milk or half and half. Just add it in a little bit at a time. Those options are thinner liquids and the dip might be perfect before you use all 2 cups of liquid.
- Red Pepper Flakes: If you want a little extra spice you can add some pepper flakes or even a pinch of cayenne pepper will work.

How to Make Queso Dip
- First, in a medium sized pot, combine the cream cheese, shredded cheeses, tomatoes, and sour cream.
- Over medium-low heat melt together until the cheese is almost all melted. Reduce heat to low.

- Then, add the heavy cream a little bit at a time stirring well after each addition. Keep adding and stirring until the queso is nice and smooth. This is when you can add in some red pepper flakes for extra heat if you like.
- Lastly, remove from heat and eat it right away!!!
Serving Queso Cheese Dip
We love enjoying this cream cheese queso with tortilla chips on taco nights! However it is so versatile you can enjoy it other ways.
- Top tacos or taco salads with it.
- Drizzle it all over these Salsa Chicken Nachos.
- Add it to a baked potato bar and pour it over those potatoes!
- Use it as a sauce for enchiladas or burritos.
- Enjoy it as a dip with chips, tator tots or veggies.
If you want to serve the dip warm, keep it over low heat on the stove stirring often or add it to a crock pot and keep warm on the low or warm setting.
Storing Homemade Queso Dip
Storing: Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
Reheating: You can reheat it on the stove over low heat or in the microwave. If using microwave, heat in 30 second intervals stirring after each one.
Make it in the Crock Pot
Add all the ingredients to your crock pot and set to low heat. Stir the dip often until it is fully melted and smooth. Keep the dip on low or warm, stirring it occasionally.

Heather's Favorite Tools for this Recipe
- These nestled bowls are my favorite for prepping ingredients.
- A box grater to shred your own cheese. I use mine almost every day!
- I love my Rachael Ray pots and pans. They've been gong strong since I got married in 2010!
- I love my crock pot that is programmable.
Tips for Queso Cheese Dip
- Shred your own cheese. The cheese will melt so much better and smoother than the pre-shredded cheese caked with non-caking agents. The pre-shredded cheese will leave the dip with a gritty and grainy texture.
- Let the cream cheese come to room temperature, and cut it into cubes. This will help all the cheese melt at the same time.
- Stir, stir and stir some more! You want everything to be melted and smooth.
- If using a crock pot to keep dip warm, stir it occasionally just in case your crock pot has any hot spots.

Super delicious! My husband is a huge fan of queso, but I’m not a fan of all the grody ingredients in the store-bought. This is the perfect answer to that problem!
