Stop number 2 on the Apple Tour is Applesauce! I use applesauce in a lot of recipes so I always have applesauce in the freezer. I've canned applesauce too, but I make it so often that it is just easier for me to freeze it. This recipe is so easy and versatile. You can add whatever flavors you like to it! I'm going to give you the basic recipe and from that you can add extra cinnamon, strawberries, blueberries, any berry for that matter, peaches, plums, etc. You get the point, right? Make your applesauce anyway you want! Then use it in all kinds of other favorite recipes like: oatmeal, muffins, pancakes, etc. Let's get to it shall we? (Don't mind my amateur Iphone pictures... my camera was MIA when I made this...)

    How to Make Applesauce

    Ingredients

    • About 6 lbs apples, chopped to 1 in pieces (any kind works!)
    • 1 cup water
    • ¼ cup lemon juice
    • 4 cinnamon sticks
    • ½ cup brown sugar or honey
    applesauce 4

    Instructions

    1. Place chopped apples, water, lemon juice and cinnamon in a large pot. If you don't have a large enough pot, split it up into two pots evenly.
    2. Cover and cook apples on medium heat for about 30 min, stirring often, until apples are soft but not too mushy. At this point you can add in other fruit to your applesauce as well. Frozen or fresh works great!
    3. Stir in sugar or honey and let cool for about 15 min.
    4. Place cooked apples in food processor in batches and process until smooth but not too long or it will get gummy. Or you can mash them with a potato masher for a more chunky applesauce.
    5. Cool completely and store in fridge or freezer.

Kids love this stuff and they love to help in the kitchen too! Get em in there and helping and they will more likely want to eat it all because they helped! I know... genius right?!
