Heat waffle iron, grease if needed.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, sugar and salt.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vanilla extract, and eggs until smooth.
Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and whisk it together a couple times.
Add the melted butter, whisk together until just fully incorporated being careful not to overmix.
Fold in the mini chocolate chips and let batter rest for a few minutes.
Using a ladle or a measuring cup, add waffle batter to hot waffle iron. Mine waffle maker takes about 1 cup of batter.
Cook the waffle according to the manufacturer's instructions. Most waffle makers will take about 3-4 minutes.
Remove waffle to a sheet pan with a cooling rack. You can keep the waffles warm in a very low oven until they are all made. Try not to stack the waffles too much because the steam can make the waffles soggy.
Serve with some butter, warm pure maple syrup, and extra chocolate chips.
